Tunnel Books
Saturday, October 3 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Yuka Petz, instructor
A tunnel book (aka peephole book) brings together a set of pages with accordions on either side, creating a book with multiple layers of foreground, mid-ground and background. Combining collage, cut paper, and bookbinding techniques, we will create dimensional windows into a multi-layered scene or world. After examining an assortment of models and brainstorming the possibilities of this unique book structure, everyone will make their own tunnel book using a variety of papers, mark-marking and collage media. All levels welcome.
All materials are included in material fee, but you are encouraged to bring collage materials that you might want to include in your book.
$60 registration +$10 material fee, limited to 4 participants.
Register in advance by emailing yuka@studioippiki.com or calling (504) 264-8267.
Decorative Paper
Saturday, October 17 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Yuka Petz, instructor
We will delve into surface design and explore three different approaches to creating beautiful decorative papers. We will begin by exploring color, layering and patternmaking through the spontaneous joy of paste papers. Then we will turn to traditional Japanese techniques, delving into the contemplative reveries of suminagashi marbling, and discovering sekkazome, a Japanese fold and dye method that result in beautiful kaleidoscopic patterns. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a giant stack of stunning papers to use in your books and other projects. All levels welcome.
This workshop uses entirely non-toxic materials. All materials will be supplied.
$60 registration +$15 material fee, limited to 4 participants.

In the Heat of the Moment
Sunday, November 8 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Jessica Peterson & Yuka Petz, instructors
Be inspired by the moment! Whether you’re a book arts beginner or seasoned pro, get ready to think on your feet and with your hands! We’ll start with the Book in a Bag, where everyone receives a mystery grab bag of standard and outlandish materials with which to make their unique artist’s book in one hour. Then we will make artist’s book exquisite corpses, in which each participant binds one book, and decides on the theme of that book. Then, all books are then circulated for each member of the group to fill a page based on the chosen theme, until the book is complete.

Hey, put down that expensive moleskin notebook! You won’t need it anymore after this workshop because you’ll be making your own BETTER THAN MOLESKIN books. We’ll focus on the pamphlet structure, a fundamental part of bookbinding. We’ll explore how to use reclaimed and recycled materials for covers and innards. Each participant will leave the workshop with at least 5 pamphlets. All supplies (which includes some cocktails!) included in the cost of the workshop.
